So far my time at The Culinary Institute of America has been spectacular. I have met many amazing people and have participated in so many fun events. This week has been the "Week of Welcome" at the CIA. Each day the school has had fun activities to do.
On the 4th we moved into our dorm rooms, I was very excited to decorate and have my vision of my dorm come to life. (I want to make a dorm tour video soon! Keep checking in!) My parents were a great help in setting up and it was nice meeting my roommate Natalie and her family. After we set up and I achieved all of my check-in responsibilities, my parents and I went to the Egg (the cafeteria). We ate and then I said bye to my parents who had a meeting and then left shortly after. That night my roommate and I went to Karaoke in the Egg. We met Kendra and Amy and I got to see my friend Claire who I talked to before coming to school. Karaoke was very fun, we were unable to go up to sing because the list filled very fast but it was enjoyable watching everyone else sing. On the 5th we began our orientation. We sat in a very cold library all day and listened to many presenters. My friend Kendra was in my group! In the evening we had a BBQ, I ate a veggie burger. I met my good friend Jenna and we sat and talked while looking out at the Hudson. After that, they had a fireworks show! The 6th was a day of more orientation activities. In the morning we went on a campus tour and then changed into our Chef Whites. We were brought to lunch and I sat with Jenna and Kendra. We then had more presentations. It was finally time for the Toque ceremony. Everyone sat together and listened to the president Dr. Tim Ryan speak. He taught us the fight song, CIA Alma Mater, and many fun facts about our school and its history. After saying the pledge we put on our Chef hats and were officially CIA students!! That evening a hypnotist came to campus and my friend Jenna, my roommate, her friend Griffin, and I went to watch. I had to leave early because I got a little too freaked out. Classes started on the 7th. That morning I was very stressed but once I started to do my work I felt much better. My Tuesday/Thursday classes were all online but one will be in person starting the 14th. I worked on Accounting, Microeconomics, and Survey of Mathematics. I enjoyed all of the classes, they were very interesting and I could see how everything I learned was applicable. After I finished all of my work I went to watch Comedian Eric O'Shea. On the 8th I had Spanish in the morning and College Writing after. Both classes are in person. I love both of the teachers and my classmates seem very intelligent. After I was done with my classes I started my homework right away. For dinner, I went to the Egg to watch the magician Peter Boie. I sat with Jenna, Natalie, Griffin, Kendra, Amy, Liam (Griffin's roommate), and Sam (Liam's friend). It was a very fun group and Kendra and Sam were both called to help! On the 9th I did my online school. It took me longer than I thought it would but I took my time and really tried to soak in all the information. That evening Jenna and I went to Bingo. Bingo Night at the CIA is a big deal, you can win anything from chocolate milk to scholarships. The 10th was an eventful day. I had my in-person classes. I met a new friend Pam in my college writing class and we got lunch at the Egg. After I went to my dorm and finished my homework. That evening I went out with Griffin, Natalie, Mary Cate, and Emily. (Mary Cate and Emily are roommates who are friends with Natalie.) They are a really fun group of people. We went to Taco Bell, Starbucks, and Target. I bought some items I forgot. It was nice to explore town away from campus. We started the day on the 11th by watching the soccer game. Sports are a big deal at the CIA and many people were at the game. We were provided lunch and watched the CIA Steels win 8-1. After Griffin drove Natalie, Emily, and me to get Boba Tea in Poughkeepsie. That night was Casino Night!!! We got dressed up and went to play Roulette, Blackjack, and Spin-the-wheel games. We were given $1,000 in chips to play for more. I won $1,440 more. At the end we cashed in our chips for raffle tickets and Emily won 250 meal points! I hung out with Cai, Julia, and Cece that night as well. I met Cai during orientation and it was nice talking to her and her friends. On Sunday the 12th Jenna and I went bowling. We took a bus to the alley and met up with Cai, Julia, and Cece. I love to bowl but I am not spectacular at it haha! We ate pizza and drank cherry Pepsi. We spent a lot of time at the bowling alley just talking and having fun. When we git back Jenna and I walked around campus and I took some video of the buildings (Campus Tour video coming soon!!). We ran into my friend Skyler and talked to him for a while too. During our adventure we accidentally stepped into a muddy pond and had to wash our shoes. Overall, I have been having a spectacular time and I have been learning so much already. Everyone I meet is so interesting and kind and I am very excited for the rest of this semester and my education at the CIA!!! :)
