So far my time at The Culinary Institute of America has been spectacular. I have met many amazing people and have participated in so many fun events. This week has been the "Week of Welcome" at the CIA. Each day the school has had fun activities to do.
On the 4th we moved into our dorm rooms, I was very excited to decorate and have my vision of my dorm come to life. (I want to make a dorm tour video soon! Keep checking in!) My parents were a great help in setting up and it was nice meeting my roommate Natalie and her family. After we set up and I achieved all of my check-in responsibilities, my parents and I went to the Egg (the cafeteria). We ate and then I said bye to my parents who had a meeting and then left shortly after. That night my roommate and I went to Karaoke in the Egg. We met Kendra and Amy and I got to see my friend Claire who I talked to before coming to school. Karaoke was very fun, we were unable to go up to sing because the list filled very fast but it was enjoyable watching everyone else sing. On the 5th we began our orientation. We sat in a very cold library all day and listened to many presenters. My friend Kendra was in my group! In the evening we had a BBQ, I ate a veggie burger. I met my good friend Jenna and we sat and talked while looking out at the Hudson. After that, they had a fireworks show! The 6th was a day of more orientation activities. In the morning we went on a campus tour and then changed into our Chef Whites. We were brought to lunch and I sat with Jenna and Kendra. We then had more presentations. It was finally time for the Toque ceremony. Everyone sat together and listened to the president Dr. Tim Ryan speak. He taught us the fight song, CIA Alma Mater, and many fun facts about our school and its history. After saying the pledge we put on our Chef hats and were officially CIA students!! That evening a hypnotist came to campus and my friend Jenna, my roommate, her friend Griffin, and I went to watch. I had to leave early because I got a little too freaked out. Classes started on the 7th. That morning I was very stressed but once I started to do my work I felt much better. My Tuesday/Thursday classes were all online but one will be in person starting the 14th. I worked on Accounting, Microeconomics, and Survey of Mathematics. I enjoyed all of the classes, they were very interesting and I could see how everything I learned was applicable. After I finished all of my work I went to watch Comedian Eric O'Shea. On the 8th I had Spanish in the morning and College Writing after. Both classes are in person. I love both of the teachers and my classmates seem very intelligent. After I was done with my classes I started my homework right away. For dinner, I went to the Egg to watch the magician Peter Boie. I sat with Jenna, Natalie, Griffin, Kendra, Amy, Liam (Griffin's roommate), and Sam (Liam's friend). It was a very fun group and Kendra and Sam were both called to help! On the 9th I did my online school. It took me longer than I thought it would but I took my time and really tried to soak in all the information. That evening Jenna and I went to Bingo. Bingo Night at the CIA is a big deal, you can win anything from chocolate milk to scholarships. The 10th was an eventful day. I had my in-person classes. I met a new friend Pam in my college writing class and we got lunch at the Egg. After I went to my dorm and finished my homework. That evening I went out with Griffin, Natalie, Mary Cate, and Emily. (Mary Cate and Emily are roommates who are friends with Natalie.) They are a really fun group of people. We went to Taco Bell, Starbucks, and Target. I bought some items I forgot. It was nice to explore town away from campus. We started the day on the 11th by watching the soccer game. Sports are a big deal at the CIA and many people were at the game. We were provided lunch and watched the CIA Steels win 8-1. After Griffin drove Natalie, Emily, and me to get Boba Tea in Poughkeepsie. That night was Casino Night!!! We got dressed up and went to play Roulette, Blackjack, and Spin-the-wheel games. We were given $1,000 in chips to play for more. I won $1,440 more. At the end we cashed in our chips for raffle tickets and Emily won 250 meal points! I hung out with Cai, Julia, and Cece that night as well. I met Cai during orientation and it was nice talking to her and her friends. On Sunday the 12th Jenna and I went bowling. We took a bus to the alley and met up with Cai, Julia, and Cece. I love to bowl but I am not spectacular at it haha! We ate pizza and drank cherry Pepsi. We spent a lot of time at the bowling alley just talking and having fun. When we git back Jenna and I walked around campus and I took some video of the buildings (Campus Tour video coming soon!!). We ran into my friend Skyler and talked to him for a while too. During our adventure we accidentally stepped into a muddy pond and had to wash our shoes. Overall, I have been having a spectacular time and I have been learning so much already. Everyone I meet is so interesting and kind and I am very excited for the rest of this semester and my education at the CIA!!! :)

The past three years, I have been involved in a KSDK partnership program. In this program two St.Louis high schools, Ladue and Gateway STEM partner to create a meaningful Public Service Announcement. This year we had a broad topic, COVID-19. My group decided to take the pandemic into mind but focus more on mental health. I worked with Jack Reeves, Chanel Sanchez, and Erik Forero. We created a video pitch and storyboard and our idea was selected to become a reality. The process of creating the video was quick and enjoyable. The editor, Joe was a great help and had valuable tips and criticism. One lesson I've learnt through this process is to trust in my abilities and stay confident in myself. I struggled a bit because I really wanted to have a good video and pitch. In addition, with this being my last year I honestly wanted to be chosen. I became a bit overwhelmed because it was very hard to communicate over zoom and sometimes it is difficult to transfer ideas into reality. However, my teacher Mr.Goble reminded me of my skill and encouraged me to trust in my ability. Mr.Randall, the KSDK employee helping us, also gave me an incredible compliment he said that I was a "force to be reckoned with" and that I "will be someone's boss one day." Overall, the KSDK partnership never fails to add a new depth to my learning and each year it has taught me so many new skills. I have met some amazing people doing this and met some professionals I hope to be like in the future. I will always cherish my time in Broadcast Technology and look back on this program fondly. For my first video in Broadcast Technology 5 we were tasked with creating a video about ourselves. The unique thing about this project was that as a class we collaborated to come up with the project idea. We worked together to list the things we should include; our favorite activities, our passion, and the technical elements needed to create the video. We had a lot of freedom, that is what I love about this class! Our teachers are here to lead us and give constructive criticism but overall once you learn the techniques you can create anything. I liked creating this video and I believe that I did a great job at showing who I am, I wish I got a little more creative though. I was blown away by all the different videos my classmates created and I am so excited for this semester and to learn more about them and what everyone creates! To watch my video click here.
For my second online learning projected I edited footage from summer last year. My sister and I spent a few weeks in France with my grandmother. We explored the vast countryside as well as the bustling city of Paris. I have been meaning to edit the footage from that time for a while but the school year and my many other obligations kept pushing the idea to the back of my mind. Because of the restrictions of distance learning I decided to revisit the idea of editing this video. I am pleased by the way that it turned out. All the clips are mostly short, but I made sure that you are able to understand all that is happening. I enjoyed editing to the beat of the music. I would have liked to film and create a video from scratch but I felt like it was time to finish this video and it was easy to accomplish with the restrictions of life at this historical time. This project was a project that pushed me far out of my comfort zone. I am not used to being the sole person on Camera. I am also not used to cooking in front of the camera. In addition, I am not used to editing on iMovie. To overcome these challenges I treated my mistakes as learning and a fun laughing experience. I also planned extensively beforehand. I filmed this project a couple days before spring break, I did not know that we would not be returning to school. I am saddened that I will not be able to cook in the kitchen again this school year. I will miss working with her and the other students in our class as well, Sandra Salib helped me film this video. I think this recipe is useful during this historic time because it is a simple (yet seemingly fancy) recipe that anyone can easily make with pantry ingredients. To watch my video click here.
This was a spectacular project that taught me many valuable lessons. To begin, I learned the importance of trying again. I had many technical problems in the first few days that I was filming, and I got discouraged quickly. In one instance I was having problems with my SD card and capturing my images. In the moment, there was nothing that I could do. However, I decided to drive home, grab a new card and go back. I then got the best interview that I have ever captured. I was so proud of my subject and myself for trying again and creating something beautiful. I was inspired by what Abigail had to say about the world and the importance that engineering and innovation has. In addition, I have enjoyed this project because I was able to better understand an activity at our school that does not get much exposure. The people that I talked to were all amazingly nice and intelligent and I had a wonderful time getting shots and interviews with them. Overall I am proud of myself and my execution of camera skills, interview questions, and editing because I believe that I created my best project yet. I had so much fun with this video and I am looking forward to creating more this year! To watch click here.
I enjoyed this project. First, I really liked the topic. When Mr.Goble originally proposed the Epic Object topic, turning an inanimate object into an object that portrays a type of emotion, my mind started racing. My ideas ranged everywhere from a bouncy ball to a piggy bank, but I ultimately decided on the idea of running shoes. The aspect of the shoes leading a person to an end destination seemed intriguing. After some class discussion I solidified my story line and started my story board. The story board was a helpful tool in visualizing the story. In addition, obtaining my shots was somewhat difficult. My sister, who I used as one of my actors, strongly disliked when I would ask her to redo a shot or change the way she moved. After some explaining, I helped her understand that producing videos is always a team effort and that striving for the best result possible is more important than few extra seconds it takes to reshoot. Giving up early and the mentality that "It's good enough" is never acceptable while attempting to create thoughtful videos. Often, I need to teach this lesson to myself as well, remind myself to invest the time and energy needed to complete my best work. Overall, producing this video was a fun, enlightening experience. I really appreciated the opportunity to push myself to imagine a creative video and portray a story with a purpose through an object. Click here to watch.
This project went extremely well. I enjoyed how the skills I learned while producing news packages adapted to create a more creative project. In addition, I enjoyed the emotion tied to this story. It was refreshing to see the passion that my subject, Jahnavi has for dance. One challenge I faced was getting shots in time. Coordinating with Jahnavi and finding the correct day to film in her dance studio was difficult, but eventually we coordinated perfectly and I got spectacular shots. Despite the fact that Jahnavi is talking about dance specifically, this project can relate to anyone. The aspect of passion is universal, and the commitment she shows can be found in many people. This video shows how through any activity you can learn valuable lessons and that true passion is incredibly powerful. I chose this assignment because I enjoyed creating news packages, but wanted to use a more laid-back approach. I really like the way that it turned out. I would say that I mastered my work. I pushed myself on this project and the final product is amazing. Overall, this was a really fun project to do and I throughly enjoyed showing the passion that Jahnavi has for dance. I had the spectacular opportunity to be a part of the 5 On Your Side Partnership Program this year. In this program, students from Ladue High School and Gateway Stem High School collaborate to create a PSA. This year, the PSA topic was centered around the idea that one should be cautious about what he or she posts online. This prompt resonated with me due to the amount of social media use my peers and I participate in. This program was an amazing way to connect with students from a different background and brainstorm creative ideas. My group did not get their proposed idea chosen, but had an amazing time getting to know each other as well as thinking creatively about video ideas. In addition, we had the fantastic chance to tour the 5 On Your Side studio. Seeing an impressive studio and the professional side of Broadcast Technology was amazing. This experience was memorable and truly enjoyable. I appreciated the ability to harmoniously collaborate and create while at the same time having fun. I am so grateful for and will never forget this incredible opportunity.
Originally, I wanted to create a behind the scenes look into the costume crew of Footloose, Ladue's spring musical. While starting my project, I ran into difficulties. Many student did not want to be interviewed, the hectic environment backstage didn't provide for good camera shots, and an unclear storyline deterred me from continuing with my original plan. Instead, I decided to interview the new acting student teacher Ms.Krenning. I learned a lot in the process of making this video. I learned how to take a project that I believed would not work out, and turn it into a video that provided insight into a new member of the Ladue community. I also learned that teamwork is incredibly important and the ideas and advice of others can help tremendously. I enjoyed this project to a degree. I liked getting to know Ms.Krenning and other students involved in Footloose, however I easily got discouraged when aspects of my project went amiss. In the scheme of things, I gained many new skills that will help me in my future endeavors in Broadcast Technology. Most importantly, I leaned how to adjust my perfectionist inside me and allow a good project to flourish. To watch my video click here.
